Perforated metals used also for ceilings and walls

Highly effective in reducing sound echo in room

In construction field, perforated metals are used not only for exterior but also for various applications in interior. Most representative applications of perforated metals are ceiling panels and wall panels in buildings, exhibition halls and display rooms. Why are they used for ceilings and walls so often?

There are several reasons, and the first of which is the suppression of sound echo in rooms. To reduce sound echo inside a room, a sound-absorbing material such as glass wool is attached to the reverse side of panel, where the glass wool and punched holes absorb sound. This is particularly effective in an exhibition hall where noise such as the sound of footsteps and voices is generated. This is also effective in suppressing cacophony due to sound echo in theaters, cinemas, event halls, etc. Taking into account floor space and ceiling height, customers can designate punched hole size and hole area rate.

When a sound passes through holes, the process of passing through holes also has the effect of reducing waveform which depends on the frequency, so panels without glass wool are used worldwide, for example in airports.

The second reason perforated metals are popular is their appearances. In many office buildings, perforated metals are used as ceiling panels of each floor. They are also popularly used for building entrances, where high design quality (metallic sharpness) is required. Metallic panels are increasingly used for the benefit of environment because they are excellent in recyclability and contribute to industrial waste reduction.

Hole arrangement by special angle

Recently, in consideration of the environment, a system using radiant heat panel for indoor air conditioning is increasingly used to gradually change and stabilize room temperature. This ecological system reduces air conditioning cost and is friendly to human bodies. Perforated metal is used as part of such system and is effective in suppressing resonance and noise.

When the horizontal cross section of a building is triangle, not square, ceiling panels adapting to the shape are used. There are also triangle ceiling panels. As explained previously, the typical arrangements of perforated metal holes are 60˚ houndstooth, 45˚ houndstooth and parallel arrangement (90˚). However, because Uchinuki manufactures its original metal molds, it handles also special hole arrangements such as 50˚ houndstooth.

For applications to ceiling, there are special type panels having an opening such as downlight hole, sprinkler hole or inspection hole. Uchinuki responds to customer request for the clear trimming of perforated panel around such an opening. Graphic punching technique, which is one of Uchinuki's original molding techniques, enables the low-cost quick delivery of special type panels and irregularly-shaped panels.

Remarkable presence also in soundproof walls for roads and railways

Not only indoor soundproofing but also outdoor soundproofing is a favorite field for Uchinuki's perforated panels. Most popular type for soundproof walls for roads and railways is 15φ burring x 24P (60˚ houndstooth). Burring is a processing method of making a protruded opening. The first reason for using a perforated metal for soundproof wall is to absorb noise by sound-absorbing material such as glass wool, and the second reason is to fixate the sound-absorbing material (e.g. glass wool) inside the sound-proofing panel (perforated panel), which is a kind of box. Burring holes are intended to enhance sound-absorbing effect by forming a space between the sound-absorbing material and surface panel (perforated panel). The protrusions of perforated holes themselves enhance panel strength relative to the thin plate thickness. Uchinuki's burring hole strength has earned it an especially high reputation. Uchinuki has made achievements not only by standard burring but also by square hole burring and other types of burring.

In response to recent customers request for a higher area rate for soundproof wall holes, Uchinuki has developed a hexagonal hole burring technique. Basically, Uchinuki performs the punching of coiled material, therefore it is capable of handling small-lot order and large order at low costs and by quick delivery.
